In Lang, the Habs acquire a veteran center to complement Tomas Plekanec and Saku Koivu. Clearly, the Canadiens are in win-now mode, so they decided to surrender a second rounder in 2010. Lang essentially takes the roster spot that was supposed to go to Mats Sundin, who was courted by Montreal since the beginning of the off-season.

The Blackhawks remove $4 million off their salary cap by dealing Lang, which puts them back under the projected limit for 2008-09. Therefore, money was the clear motivating factor in dealing Lang, who turns 38 in December, at this time. Finnish rookie Petri Kontiola could be the biggest beneficiary of Lang's departure.
