CAMPBELL JOINS PANTHERS

The Florida Panthers acquired defenseman Brian Campbell from the Chicago Blackhawks for winger Rostislav Olesz.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
The Panthers have plenty of salary-cap space, and needed a boost to actually reach the 2011-12 salary-cap floor, so adding Campbell makes sense. He's quite expensive but still useful as a mobile puck-moving defenseman. His offense took a bit of a backseat in Chicago, but expect Campbell to play a more offensive role in South Florida. A rebound season may now occur in his new digs.

What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks needed to get out from under Campbell's contract, no matter how they did it. Mission accomplished. In Olesz, Chicago adds another expensive contract, but a more manageable one. Olesz is a pretty good defensive winger who has yet to find his mark offensively. At the very least, he should have a new lease on life with the 'Hawks. The key here, though, is losing Campbell's cap hit.
