IT'S OFFICIAL: ROBERTS TO PENS

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired left winger Gary Roberts from the Florida Panthers for defenseman Noah Welch.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
In Roberts, the Penguins add a much needed veteran presence for their youthful locker room. Roberts is somewhat prone to injury, but his warrior-like mentality will be a welcome addition in Pittsburgh. He should line up either on the first line alongside Sidney Crosby, or the second unit with Evgeni Malkin. Either way, he will help the club secure a postseason berth and be a key element in the Pens' playoff push.

What does it give the Florida Panthers
Welch was obviously a player the Panthers' scouts liked a lot, since they reportedly turned down more assets from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Look for Welch to crack Florida's blueline brigade by next season--at the latest. He's a stable, stay-at-home type with all-around upside that should do well under Jacques Martin's defensive system. Florida has a lot of depth up front, so replacing Roberts shouldn't be very difficult.
