BRUINS REUNITE CHARA AND REDDEN
The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Wade Redden from the St. Louis Blues for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014.
What does it give the Boston Bruins
The Bruins wanted a depth defenseman, and veteran Redden certainly qualifies as such at this stage of his career. He's familiar with several members of the Bruins organization, especially General Manager Peter Chiarelli and captain {P Zdeno Chara}, so he may be a good short-term fit. He may also add an element to the power play if he's in the lineup.
What does it give the St. Louis Blues
The Blues wanted to get rid of a defenseman after acquiring {P Jordan Leopold} and {P Jay Bouwmeester} recently, so they decided to part with veteran Redden instead of younger blueliners like {P Kris Russell} or {P Ian Cole}. If Redden dressed at least once in the playoffs for the Bruins, the seventh rounder will become a sixth rounder. All told, this is a no-brainer move for the Blues.
Fantasy impact
Redden may net a few more points in Boston, especially if he establishes himself in the lineup and on the power play. That said, he is clearly a short-term depth move for the Bruins.
