WISNIEWSKI TO ISLANDERS

The New York Islanders acquired defenseman James Wisniewski from the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional third-round pick in 2011.

What does it give the New York Islanders
In Wisniewski, the Isles pick up a good-skating defenseman with a nasty streak and some offensive ability. He should instantly become a top-four rearguard on Long Island. He isn't very consistent, and can be found running around his own end at times, but brings an element of toughness that the Isles lacked. He also helps the team get to the salary-cap floor.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks signed Wisniewski, who was a restricted free agent, shortly before trading him to the Islanders for the conditional third rounder in '11. It's a bit of a strange move for Anaheim, though they are a team with an internal budget that is still trying to re-sign winger Bobby Ryan (another RFA). Also, veteran UFA Teemu Selanne may come back as well, so cap space was needed.
