FOSTER TO THE DEVILS FOR PELLEY, FRASER

The New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Kurtis Foster and goaltender Timo Pielmeier from the Anaheim Ducks for forward Rod Pelley, defenseman Mark Fraser and a seventh-round draft pick in 2012.

What does it give the New Jersey Devils
Pelley and Fraser have both been regular scratches under head coach Peter DeBoer this season so it's not surprising they're headed out of Jersey. Add to that the team's ongoing need for a power play point man (especially with rookie Adam Larsson's recent struggles) and bringing in Foster makes a lot of sense. Additionally, his affordable contract expires after this season. Pielmeier is a young talent but has yet to find consistency at lower levels, so is a nice long-range prospect for the Devils (especially with Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg both nearing 40).

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
An early injury saw Foster get off to a tough start with the Ducks this season and he never managed to play his way into their regular rotation. Pelley and Fraser can both be solid depth players for Anaheim going forward (something the team needs), and both have expiring contracts that combined don't add up to Foster's (so the Ducks save a little money here as well).
