NIINIMAA TO DALLAS

The Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Janne Niinimaa and a fifth-round draft pick in 2007 from the New York Islanders for defenseman John Erskine and a second-round draft pick in 2006.

What does it give the Dallas Stars
The Stars are comfortable with Finnish players, so Niinimaa should blend in well with Dallas. He won't be asked to do too much, but should become a staple on the penalty kill. He's no longer an offensive threat, but he should help Dallas in their quest to win the Pacific Division crown.

What does it give the New York Islanders
In Erskine, the Isles finally address their need for more toughness. However, can he play a regular shift at the NHL level? If he can't, he'll turn into the next Eric Cairns. This is the 25-year-old Erskine's time to prove his doubters wrong. Either way, the Isles should benefit from the Stars' second rounder in the upcoming draft.
