KINGS ADD SOPEL & PARRISH
The Los Angeles Kings acquired defenseman Brent Sopel and right wing Mark Parrish from the New York Islanders for defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, winger Jeff Tambellini and a conditional third-round draft pick in 2006.
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
The Kings had enough prospects to swing a major deal, and even flirted with the idea of making a pitch for Florida goalie Roberto Luongo. Instead, they land Sopel, who will help the power play and puck movement from the back end, and Parrish--who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Parrish, a natural right wing, will help in the scoring department as a top-six forward. The Kings gave up a lot, but now have a club capable of making a little noise in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders are clearly in selling mode, but have added a couple of promising pieces for the future. The key may be Tambellini, who has the makings of a solid all-around forward. Grebeshkov, who has struggled in his brief time in the NHL, also owns a high ceiling. The conditional pick is probably contingent upon Parrish re-signing with the Kings. Any way you slice it, this is a very good deal for the Islanders.
