RUCINSKY TO VANCOUVER
The Vancouver Canucks acquired left-winger Martin Rucinsky from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Martin Grenier and center R.J. Umberger.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
A solid (if unspectacular) veteran scorer for the stretch. Acquiring Rucinsky is especially vital for the Canucks now that star winger Todd Bertuzzi faces a potentially lengthy suspension for his sucker punch on Colorado's Steve Moore. The Canucks have also been thin up front after their star first line, so Rucinsky was a must-add for the team heading into the playoffs. He's scored at least 20 goals five times, so he'll help.
What does it give the New York Rangers
A rough-and-tumble defenseman, more financial flexibility and a potential player in Umberger--who must be signed. Grenier is a hulking specimen who still toils in the minor leagues after being picked 45th overall (by Colorado) in the 1999 entry draft. In 38 games for the Manitoba Moose of the AHL this year, Grenier has five goals, four assists, and 145 penalty minutes.
