BLUE JACKETS GET VERMETTE

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Antoine Vermette from the Ottawa Senators for goaltender Pascal Leclaire and a second-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
Vermette is a great face-off man that plays both center and wing, but in Columbus he is likely to be asked to play an important role down the middle. His offensive ability is somewhat overrated, but his two-way play fits Ken Hitchcock's defensive system to a tee. The emergence of young netminder Steve Mason made this deal possible.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators' long-term answer at the goaltending position could be finally resolved with Leclaire, though he must get over his injury woes in order for that to happen. The Sens now have an offensive hole by dealing Vermette but he was miscast in a scoring role in Ottawa. As long as Leclaire can stay healthy going forward, the Sens will win this trade--especially with the extra second rounder thrown in.
