ALEDMYS DIAZ DEALT TO HOUSTON

The Houston Astros acquired infielder Aledmys Diaz from the Toronto Blue Jays for pitcher Trent Thornton.

What does it give the Houston Astros
For the Astros, Diaz should serve as a utility infielder in 2019. He might also see time in the outfield as the likely replacement for free agent Marwin Gonzalez (who is not expected back in Houston). The 28-year-old Diaz should see ample playing time because of his versatility.

What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays have a surplus of infielders heading into 2019, so they could afford to ship Diaz out at this time. In Thornton, Toronto lands a solid right-hander who can both start and relieve. The 25-year-old is close to debuting in MLB and is a decent pickup for the Jays.

Fantasy impact
Diaz moves to the contending Astros, where his fantasy stock may be dependent on his playing time. He will be a solid addition to a fantasy bench next year, especially for all Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman owners. Since he will not go into '19 with a starting job in Houston (in all probability), Diaz may not need to be drafted in most league formats. He could be a waiver-wire addition during the season.
