ASTROS JETTISON J.D. DAVIS IN A SWAP WITH THE METS
The New York Mets acquired infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis and infielder Cody Bohanek from the Houston Astros for outfielder Ross Adolph, infielder Luis Santana and catcher Scott Manea.
What does it give the New York Mets
This is an interesting trade involving five players aged 25 or younger. Davis is the headliner here, as he has already seen time in MLB with Houston. A power hitter who has dominated at the minor-league level, Davis is still looking to find his form in MLB. A huge physical specimen, he will probably compete for playing time at both first and third base in New York. As for Bohanek, he is a second base prospect with a decent bat. He might become an option to replace veteran Robinson Cano in Queens down the road.
What does it give the Houston Astros
The Astros no longer needed Davis, whose path to regular playing time was blocked in Houston. So, the 'Stros did well here to add three position prospects. Adolph and Santana are both talented and young. The former might eventually become the team's center-fielder of the future, while Santana could be in line to become the heir apparent to superstar Jose Altuve at second base. Manea is also a decent catching prospect who will add organizational depth for the time being.
Fantasy impact
Davis should get a better opportunity with the Mets than was the case in Houston, though there remain questions about his ability to hit for average in MLB. He should be selected in the middle rounds in keeper leagues and late in year-to-year formats) this year. Adolph and Santana should already be on the fantasy radar as potential keepers. Both are decent late-round fliers in deep drafts. Also, both Bohanek and Manea have some upside and might become fantasy factors down the road.
