PADRES, MARINERS MAKE SEVEN-PLAYER SWAP

The San Diego Padres acquired catcher/infielder Austin Nola and pitchers Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla from the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Taylor Trammell, pitcher Andres Munoz, infielder Ty France and catcher Luis Torrens.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
The Padres are clearly looking to make a major push for the playoffs down the stretch, as this move is just one of many they decided to make before the August 31 trade deadline. Nola will help as a possible platoon catcher with fellow newcomer Jason Castro, though the former can also play several other positions.Altavilla adds bullpen depth, while Adams might be able to do the same at some point (he is currently out with a torn ACL). Overall, this was a very good deal for the contending Padres.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
For the Mariners, landing Trammell (who turns 23 in a few weeks) is likely the key. The toolsy outfielder has a chance to become an impact player for Seattle, a team with needs in the outfield. Torrens was stuck behind several other catchers in San Diego, so he should get more opportunities with the M's (especially with Nola going the other way in this deal). France is a solid infielder who can play several positions, while Munoz is a talented reliever with promise (although currently out long term with injury).

Fantasy impact
In the short term, Nola seems like the only player worth picking up in most non-keeper leagues among those traded here. For keeper formats, Torrens, Munoz and Trammell have a chance to make an impact down the road. Nola's long-range prospects will likely be tied to his ultimate position (and playing time) with the Padres. The same goes for France.
