DONALDSON DEALT TO THE YANKEES

The New York Yankees acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson, shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt from the Minnesota Twins for infielder Gio Urshela and catcher Gary Sanchez.

What does it give the New York Yankees
In Donaldson, the Yankees land a terrific slugger who has had terrible trouble staying healthy. He will man the hot corner and provide run production from the right side of the plate when in the lineup. Kiner-Falefa is a clear defensive upgrade over Urshela at shortstop, but a downgrade with the bat. Rortvedt is a decent young catcher who made his MLB debut in 2021. He may play in New York this season.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
Urshela is the key to the deal from a Twins perspective. He can play either third base or shortstop, which adds value to Minnesota as they figure out their 2022 lineup. Sanchez has been in decline in recent seasons and is not even expected to remain with the Twins. Expect more deals from Minnesota involving Sanchez, although they could struggle to find a suitable trade partner.

Fantasy impact
Donaldson is a good fantasy option at the hot corner but is getting up there in age and has always been an injury-prone player. Proceed with caution. Urshela has more value now because he is guaranteed to play every day with the Twins. Sanchez is still worthy of being drafted this year, since the catching position is largely barren. That said, his situation is murky so do not draft him too early. Kiner-Falefa is a good source for steals but is otherwise mediocre from a fantasy standpoint. Keep an eye on Rortvedt this year.
