BOSTON BRINGS IN BACKSTOP JANSEN
The Boston Red Sox acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays for infielders Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino, and pitcher Gilberto Batista.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox continue to add in their surprise attempt to grab one of the American League wild card spots this season. Veteran Jansen has proven capable of being a starting catcher with his defense behind the plate, and he was also adored by many pitchers during his time with the Blue Jays. He does offer some home-run power, too. Like any catcher, the injury bug has gotten Jansen a few times this season. However, if he can stay healthy down the stretch, the Red Sox pitching staff and lineup could both benefit from having him on the team.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays
Jansen was the longest-tenured Blue Jay and very well respected in the clubhouse. He will be missed. Coffey, a second-round pick in 2022, seems to be the top prospect coming back in this trade. He has found a nice groove in high Single-A ball (14 HR, 46 RBI in 61 games). Paulino can play multiple positions on the infield, leading some to believe he may have a future as a utility player. Batista is a 19-year-old pitcher. He is very far away from MLB, as he has only made eight appearances in Rookie ball this season.
Fantasy impact
Jansen's approach at the plate is to pull the ball with as much power as possible. With the Green monster in left field at Fenway Park, his approach could aid him offensively and boost his fantasy value. The three prospects the Jays received are all too far away from the majors to be on the fantasy radar right now.
