WASHINGTON SENDS WINKER TO THE METS
The New York Mets acquired outfielder Jesse Winker from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Tyler Stuart.
What does it give the New York Mets
Winker comes to the Mets during a resurgent season. He is the type of hitter who makes the pitcher earn it every at-bat, and if a mistake is made he has the power to do damage. Expect him to see most of his playing time in place of Starling Marte, still on the injured list. In the midst of a playoff push, Winker should provide the Mets with a boost in the lineup.
What does it give the Washington Nationals
After signing Winker to a low-risk minor-league contract, the still-rebuilding Nationals were able to turn his bounce-back season into a young starting pitcher. Stuart is massive (6'9"). This season in Double-A ball, he has a 3.96 ERA in 17 starts. He has been a fast riser through the minor leagues, so Nationals fans could see him in the not-so-distant future.
Fantasy impact
Winker may be the biggest surprise in fantasy baseball this season. He has filled the stat sheet in a number of important categories. He should continue that in New York, but on a deeper team his role may change. So, that is something to monitor. Stuart is not yet ready to put himself into the fantasy conversation.
