PIRATES AND ROCKIES TRADE SOUTHPAWS
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Jalen Beeks from the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Luis Peralta.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Beeks will provide the Pirates with bullpen depth, as they try to push for a National League Wild Card spot. The veteran left-hander should fill a role in middle relief, behind left-handed setup man Aroldis Chapman on the depth chart. Beeks worked to a middling 4.74 ERA in 49.1 innings with the Rockies this season, but those numbers figure to improve.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
Peralta is a young left-hander who has been in the Pirates organization since 2017. The 23-year-old has begun to find more success working as a reliever this season. At Double-A ball, he had an impressive 0.91 ERA in 39.2 innings with 64 strikeouts. Walks have always been an issue, but the Rockies must like Peralta's potential. It is a good addition.
Fantasy impact
At times, Beeks pitched in high-leverage situations with the Rockies this season (nine saves and five holds). But now in Pittsburgh, he will likely be limited to the occasional hold, at best. His strikeout/walk ratio is also way down this season, so he has little fantasy value after this trade. Rockies pitchers are usually off the fantasy radar, and Peralta is no exception.
