CARDINALS SEND CARLSON TO TAMPA BAY
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielder Dylan Carlson from the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher Shawn Armstrong.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
Carlson has never rediscovered his 2021 form (NL Rookie of the Year finalist). Due to his struggles, he lost playing time and that compounded the issue. Now with a fresh start in Tampa Bay, Carlson will get a chance to rebound. The Rays like their platoons, so they will put him in a position to succeed; Carlson just needs to take advantage of it.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals
With Tommy Pham back in St. Louis, and taking over Carlson's role, they decided to trade Carlson to help improve the bullpen. Armstrong has been an opener at times for the Rays, while also pitching in the middle innings. The latter role will be the one he fills with the Cardinals. Even with a bloated 5.40 ERA this season, he may provide solid bullpen depth.
Fantasy impact
Carlson and Armstrong are both underperforming too much to be considered options in fantasy baseball this season. Pass.
