SIXERS HAUL IN HARRIS IN BLOCKBUSTER SWAP
The Philadelphia 76ers acquired forward Tobias Harris, center Boban Marjanovic and forward/center Mike Scott from the Los Angeles Clippers for guard Landry Shamet, forward/center Mike Muscala, forward Wilson Chandler, a first-round draft pick in 2020, a first-round draft pick in 2021, a second-round draft pick in 2021 and a second-round draft pick in 2023.
What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers
It is interesting to note that the 76ers decided to make this massive trade immediately after losing at home to Toronto (one of the teams Philadelphia has to defeat in order to reach the NBA Finals). Adding Harris gets Philly one step closer, as the multi-talented big man is a significant upgrade to the Sixers' frontcourt. He joins center Joel Embiid, point guard Ben Simmons and veterans Jimmy Butler and JJ Redick to form an elite starting five. Marjanovic can be an effective pivot in short stints, so he will probably back up Embiid in Philly. As for Scott, look for him to be utilized in the same role as he had in Los Angeles--backing up Harris at power forward. Overall, this trade is a major win for Philadelphia.
What does it give the Los Angeles Clippers
This trade works on a few levels for the Clippers, as well. First of all, Harris was about to become a free agent this summer. So, LA did very well here to get multiple future assets in return. The two first rounders should help the Clips down the line, while the two second rounders add more potential trade chips. This trade also clears roster and cap space for a big potential big move (or two) for Los Angeles. They have been linked to potential free agents Kawhi Leonard (Toronto) and even the Sixers' Butler, so this trade places LA in a better position to compete for the big names this summer. Furthermore, Shamet is a nice addition and may ultimately become half of a quality backcourt alongside rookie point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Muscala and Chandler are veteran backups at this point.
Fantasy impact
This trade impacts Harris and Shamet the most, one negatively and one positively. The 26-year-old Harris goes from being arguably the No. 1 scoring option in LA to No. 4 in Philly. He is still fantasy-worthy but this trade hurts his overall value significantly. On the other hand, Shamet might become the next Redick (a former Clippers shooting guard) for Los Angeles. He may not play a ton early on, depending on other moves involving Clippers guards before the NBA trade deadline, but Shamet may be starting at the 2-guard by the end of 2018-19. Pick him up. The other players involved in this mega-deal are pure backups, so they should remain on the waiver wire (assuming they are already there).
