CLIPS CORRAL REDICK, DUDLEY FOR BLEDSOE, BUTLER
In a 3-team trade, the Los Angeles Clippers acquired combo guard J.J. Redick from the Milwaukee Bucks, and also acquired swingman Jared Dudley from the Phoenix Suns. In return, Phoenix receives point guard Eric Bledsoe and small forward Caron Butler from the Clippers, and Milwaukee receives two future second-round draft picks (one from the Clippers, and one from Phoenix).
What does it give the Los Angeles Clippers
The Clips wanted to offer Redick as much as they could so the Bucks (Redick's team last season) help them here in a sign-and-trade deal. Redick is a nice--if somewhat unexpected--addition to Lob City, in that he is an excellent perimeter shooter who can take some of the pressure off L.A.'s high-flying in-the-paint game. He's obviously not a dunker, but Redick is an increasingly deft passer who should be a strong rotation regular for the Clippers. Meanwhile Dudley is a superb and versatile wing player who can do a lot of different things for his team, include provide locker-room leadership. Losing the gifted Bledsoe hurts, but the Clippers are trying to contend and only have so much money and so many minutes to go around.
What does it give the Phoenix Suns
Bledsoe is a definite steal for the Suns here, even though they now seem to have two talented No. 1 point guards (in Bledsoe and {P Goran Dragic}). It won't be surprising if Bledsoe and Dragic play alongside one another in the Phoenix backcourt a lot in 2013-14. In Butler the Suns get a steadying veteran small forward who can possibly start at the 3-spot and end the revolving door the team has seen at that position recently.
What does it give the Milwaukee Bucks
Getting two future second-round picks isn't exactly great return for a player of Redick's value but the Bucks expected him to leave via free agency so at least they get something here. A USA Today report says the Bucks have inked {P O.J. Mayo} to be their new starting shooting guard, so Redick won't be missed too much.
Fantasy impact
On paper at least, Redick (at shooting guard) and Dudley (at small forward) may start for the Clippers when they tip-off in the fall. Both are very solid complementary options who can help superstars {P Chris Paul} (who has re-signed) and {P Blake Griffin} excel. For the Suns, Bledsoe's fantasy value soars with this trade, although the young Phoenix squad he and Butler join are still somewhat a mess roster-wise, and a lot still needs to get sorted out between now and October. For the time being, it's likely Bledsoe starts alongside Dragic, and the two of them will probably be 1-2 in team scoring. Butler's arrival probably diminishes whatever fantasy value the unpredictable and inconsistent {P Michael Beasley} had. Nothing changes for Milwaukee.
