SUNS SHIP FIRST-ROUNDER TO KNICKS
The Phoenix Suns acquired center Kurt Thomas and the draft rights to guard Dijon Thompson (No. 54 overall pick in the 2005 draft) from the New York Knicks in exchange for forward Quentin Richardson and the draft rights to guard Nate Robinson (No. 21 o
What does it give the Phoenix Suns
Above all, money to pay emerging young stars Amare Stoudemire and Joe
Johnson. Richardson becomes the odd man out in Phoenix after a spotty
first season with them. He disappeared in the playoffs and the $37.62
Million over the next five years they would have had to pay him is now
freed up to re-sign Stoudemire (who needs and extension) and Johnson
(who is an impending free agent). Thomas is much less expensive with
only three years and $22.7 Million left on his deal. Thomas also gives
Phoenix more size to throw around in the playoffs. Thompson gives the
Suns depth and versatility at the swingman position.
What does it give the New York Knicks
A new starting small forward in Richardson and one of the most exciting
sixth men in the league in Robinson. The once-Mighty Q still holds the
all-star three-point title, and immediately gives the team the perimeter
threat they need. He's also an excellent rebounder for his size and guy
who loves the limelight, his fiance (the singer Brandy) will love New
York, and he seems a perfect fit. Meanwhile Robinson may become a folk
hero for the Knicks, a true high flyer and sparkplug who can wow fans
with his hustle and incredible dunking.
