PRONGER TO EDMONTON

The Edmonton Oilers acquired defenseman Chris Pronger from the St. Louis Blues for defensemen Eric Brewer, Jeff Woywitka and Doug Lynch.

What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
Wow. Welcome to the new world order in the NHL. Adding Pronger is huge for the Oilers, who can now focus on re-igniting their offensive game--while giving the towering blueliner all sorts of ice time. Pronger will play in all situations and should also provide an enormous amount of leadership to the young Oil. This move is GM Kevin Lowe's defining moment (so far).

What does it give the St. Louis Blues
In Brewer, Woywitka and Lynch, the Blues decided to take a package of quantity over expensive quality. Obviously, the club couldn't survive under the salary cap with Pronger, Keith Tkachuk and Doug Weight on the payroll so something had to give. While Brewer will probably thrive as a "mini-Pronger" of sorts, GM Larry Pleau didn't address his need for added skill up front. I suppose beggars can't be choosers.
