DEVILS REEL IN MEIER!
The New Jersey Devils acquired winger Timo Meier, defensemen Scott Harrington and Santeri Hatakka, forward Timur Ibragimov, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round draft pick in 2024 from the San Jose Sharks for forwards Fabian Zetterlund and Andreas Johnsson, defensemen Nikita Okhotiuk and Shakir Mukhamadullin, a conditional first-round draft pick in 2023, a conditional second-round draft pick in 2024 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024.
What does it give the New Jersey Devils
The Devils have landed the biggest fish of the trade deadline! Meier is a stud, having already scored 52 points in 57 games. He will likely play his dynamic power game alongside fellow Swiss Nico Hischier. Meier's addition gives New Jersey one of the best offenses in the NHL, and signifies that the Devils are entering their contention window. San Jose is also retaining 50 percent of Meier's salary this season. Harrington could see games with New Jersey down the stretch in a depth defenseman role. Hatakka, Ibragimov and Emond were likely added in this deal to even out the number of contracts going each way. Both conditional picks could turn out to be future first-round picks, so the future is now in New Jersey.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are in full rebuilding mode and were able to acquire a lot of pieces back from the Devils. The two conditional picks are the eye catchers, but keep an eye on the two young defensemen in the deal. Okhotiuk was a second-round pick in 2019 and even scored a goal in 10 games with the Devils earlier this season. Mukhamadullin was the 20th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and is currently playing in the KHL. San Jose hopes the Russian duo can form a top-four pairing in the near future. Zetterlund is in his first full NHL campaign, scoring 20 points in 45 games. He should play a larger offensive role with the Sharks. For Johnsson, this is a chance for him to re-establish himself in the NHL; he should play out the season on San Jose's rebuilding roster.
Fantasy impact
Meier was a must-own forward even before this trade, but now his offensive numbers could see a big boost playing on an explosive Devils squad. Just monitor his injury. It is said to be minor but could delay his first appearance in New Jersey. A sneaky player to watch is Zetterlund in San Jose. He was putting up decent numbers with the Devils, and now his role with the Sharks could expand into playing top-six forward minutes with power-play time. Johnsson might be worth a pickup down the stretch, while Mukhamadullin is a definite keeper who could arrive in the NHL in 2023-24. None of the other names have much fantasy value at this time.
