O'SULLIVAN ON THE MOVE IN THREE-TEAM DEAL
In a three-way trade, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired forward Patrick O'Sullivan and a second-round draft pick in 2009 from the Los Angeles Kings for winger Justin Williams. Then, the Edmonton Oilers acquired O'Sullivan and a second-round draft pick
What does it give the Carolina Hurricanes
Cole is likely to be reunited with his former center, Eric Staal, with the Hurricanes. This works well for the 'Canes because Williams wasn't ready to play yet and Carolina needs players in a hurry in order to make the playoffs. Cole is a potential unrestricted free agent this summer but, since they've re-committed to him, expect a deal to be made this summer.
What does it give the Edmonton Oilers
O'Sullivan is smaller but more skilled than Cole, and he is better at playing left wing. So, he should be a better fit on the Oilers' first line than Cole was. He's also under contract beyond this season, which helps Edmonton moving forward. That said, O'Sullivan may not be enough for the Oilers to get in the playoffs this year.
What does it give the
Williams is a natural right-winger, so he should be a good fit in L.A. when healthy. He will slide behind captain Dustin Brown whenever he returns healthy. O'Sullivan's departure potentially opens up a roster spot for Oscar Moller to see increased ice time for the Kings down the stretch.
