Had good size and a sound work ethic. Possessed team skills and was a solid role player. Killed penalties with aplomb and added toughness to any lineup. Was at his best on a checking unit. Lacked natural talent, so he had a tendency to struggle in the NHL when given too much ice time. Was only an average skater by big-league standards. Was also prone to prolonged slumps.
