Thompson made 18 saves on 19 shots during the Capitals' 4-1 win over the Penguins on Saturday.
Thompson was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate, according to Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press, and is slated to patrol the home crease versus Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Impressive showings in the ECHL and AHL earned the tall, right-catching goaltender an NHL opportunity. He generally plays at the top of his crease and is active in the net, not only with his skating and positioning but also with his hands, as well. His acrobatic style can look chaotic, but he gives off an air of calm on the ice.
