The Panthers placed Thompson (Achilles) on injured reserve Saturday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Thompson underwent a season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair his torn Achilles tendon, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Instinctive, smart, and uncommonly versatile. Played several different positions on the field in college, including linebacker and tailback. As a defender he's supremely opportunistic and aware: buzzes around the action, is a regular threat to strip or steal the ball, and has great ball skills going the other way. Superb in pass coverage. May not yet have a true position as a pro. Excels most as a linebacker but may be best suited to playing safety. Will need some time and reps to find his niche in the NFL. Not particularly fast in a straight line or stout and consistent as a wrap-up tackler.
Long Range Potential: Playmaking inside linebacker or safety, with unique all-round ability.
