Spurgeon (hip/back surgeries) said Friday that he is feeling very good and is confident he will be ready to play next season, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic.
Spurgeon is scheduled to undergo left hip surgery Feb. 6 followed by back surgery roughly four weeks later. He will miss the rest of 2023-24 but is expected to be ready for training camp.
One of the NHL's smallest defensemen, he makes up for his lack of size with his puck-carrying, skating and shooting abilities, as well as his high hockey IQ. Produces good offensive numbers on a regular basis thanks to his accurate point shot and passing skills. Injuries are an occasional issue because of his lack of size, but when he is healthy he can play huge minutes effectively on a nightly basis. Always leads by example.
Long Range Potential: Skilled, big-minute veteran defenseman and leader by example.
