Mateychuk signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets on Wednesday.
The undersized defenseman more than makes up for any size shortcomings with his skating; he can make the transition from defense to offense quickly and evade pressure when carrying the puck. He can play with pace, is a good passer and has a hard shot that helps to create offense. He will definitely need to get stronger in order to be effective in his own zone against NHL-sized forwards.
Long Range Potential: Quality but diminutive defenseman with upside.
