LEAFS GET TOSKALA AND BELL

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired goaltender Vesa Toskala and forward Mark Bell from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional first-round draft pick, a second-round draft pick in 2007 (44th overall) and a fourth-round draft pick in 2009.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
In Toskala, the Maple Leafs acquired a second potential No. 1 goaltender in a calendar year...after swapping prospect Tuukka Rask to Boston for Andrew Raycroft a year ago. Toskala is expected to take over the starting nod, and he's also expected to sign a contract extension with Toronto. Bell was a huge bust with the Sharks, but adds size and goal-scoring upside to the Leafs' core of forwards. The Leafs have added significant dollars to their salary cap for 2007-08, so look for them to make a few cost-cutting moves to even things out. Still, they gave up a lot for two marginal upgrades.

What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks may have made a major coup here. Not only did they free up cap space, which is expected to lead to a move for Buffalo co-captain Chris Drury, but San Jose also acquired three future assets. The first rounder is a conditional pick: They may opt to select 13th overall this year, or take Toronto's 2008 first rounder. Furthermore, if the Leafs' pick next season winds up in the top 10, the first rounder automatically becomes a 2009 pick instead of 2008. Any way you slice it, this is an awesome trade for Sharks GM Doug Wilson--and one that might haunt the Toronto franchise for years to come.
