What does it give the Florida Panthers
The Panthers lost captain and fourth-line center Derek MacKenzie to retirement this off-season, so Toninato adds organizational depth. He may compete for a job on the fourth line but is more likely to spend most of 2019-20 in the AHL.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche may have early-season injuries to deal with on defense in 2019-20, namely Erik Johnson and Ian Cole. Therefore, they may need some depth in the AHL. Enter MacDonald, who played two NHL games in 2018-19.
