BOYLE TO SAN JOSE
The San Jose Sharks acquired defensemen Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich from the Tampa Bay Lightning for defensemen Matt Carle and Ty Wishart, a first-round draft pick in 2009 and fourth-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
In Boyle, the Sharks land the missing power-play quarterback due to the departure of Brian Campbell for the greener pastures of unrestricted free agency. Lukowich adds a veteran defensive presence to the lineup, as well. It was a steep price to pay, in particular the addition of blueline prospect Wishart and a first rounder in what is expected to be a very good 2009 draft crop, but Boyle should make an immediate impact in Northern California.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Lightning
Carle may effectively replace Boyle as Tampa Bay's power-play quarterback, but first he must rebound from a bad 2007-08 campaign in San Jose. Wishart is a solid prospect who needs more seasoning, but perhaps the key to the deal from a Bolts perspective are the draft picks. Adding a first rounder in '09 is a coup for a Tampa Bay team looking to complete their rebuilding task.
