KINGS ADD HALPERN
The Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Jeff Halpern from the Tampa Bay Lightning for winger Teddy Purcell and a third-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
Halpern's contract wasn't too weighty but getting it off the books will save the Lightning money down the stretch. Purcell is a player high on scoring potential but not on consistency, and is a nice return here (especially with a very nice draft pick) for Halpern, who is set for free agency this off-season so may not have returned. Great deal for Tampa Bay.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Kings are a contender but are laden with youth, so a solid vet like Halpern should do a lot for them in terms of leadership for the playoffs. He can be a very valuable and versatile player in the right role (likely on one of the lower two lines) and should step up with this new opportunity. They pay a lot here for Halpern, but are obviously suddenly in 'win-now mode.'
