TELLQVIST TO PHOENIX

The Phoenix Coyotes acquired goaltender Mikael Tellqvist from the Toronto Maple Leafs for winger Tyson Nash and a fourth-round draft pick in 2007.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
In Tellqvist, the Coyotes add badly-needed goaltending depth. He'll team with Curtis Joseph who, ironically enough, preceded Tellqvist with the Leafs. This will also allow Phoenix to send David LeNeveu back to the AHL for more seasoning. At age 27, Tellqvist may still have time to establish himself as a starting netminder in the NHL. At worst, look for him to finally land a permanent gig in the big league--after losing the backup job to Jean-Sebastien Aubin in Toronto during training camp.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
Nash had been toiling in the AHL this season, and may remain down on the farm with the Maple Leafs organization. If recalled to the big club, he'll play a fourth-line agitating role. The key to the deal from Toronto's perspective is the fourth rounder, as well as the roster spot opened up by trading the third-string netminder. Jean-Francois Racine now becomes Toronto's third stringer behind starter Andrew Raycroft and Aubin.
