FEDOROV FOR BALEJ

The New York Rangers acquired winger Fedor Fedorov from the Vancouver Canucks for winger Jozef Balej and a conditional draft pick.

What does it give the New York Rangers
Fedorov is the second brother of a more famous hockey player acquired by the Blueshirts in a week, following Marcel Hossa. Fedorov's potential is still quite high, so hopefully a change of scenery will get the best out of him. Balej failed to crack the lineup this year, and was essentially replaced by Petr Prucha on the roster. A good gamble for the Rangers.

What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
Fedorov had refused the Canucks' latest contract offer and wanted assurances of playing in the NHL...which GM Dave Nonis wasn't about to give. Therefore, Nonis received good value for Fedorov in Balej and a conditional pick. Balej will head to the AHL's Manitoba Moose but may find his way back to the NHL if he regains his scoring touch.
