The Ottawa Senators acquired forward Ryan Shannon from the Vancouver Canucks for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators
Shannon will likely make the Sens as a depth forward with some offensive upside. His main competition figures to be young wingers Jesse Winchester and Ilya Zubov. Since Shannon has more NHL experience, he should hold an edge before the start of the pre-season schedule.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
Nycholat is a depth defenseman that is likely to spend the majority of the 2008-09 campaign with the AHL's Manitoba Moose. There's an outside chance he could break camp with the Canucks as their No. 7 blueliner, but Nycholat was added mainly as an insurance policy.
