BLUES WELCOME BRIAN SAVAGE

The St. Louis Blues acquired left-winger Brian Savage from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for future considerations.

What does it give the St. Louis Blues
An experienced scorer for the stretch run. With the St. Louis attack sputtering terribly lately, they need all the help they can get. Savage could be a nice fit, since the Blues have plenty of playmakers but few shooters. Savage has scored at least 20 goals five times, and becomes the team's only true left winger other than Keith Tkachuk. He's also a 33 years old, so should fit in well on the veteran squad.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
An interesting, low-risk gamble. If the Blues keep Savage (they have the option to return him after this season), Phoenix is off the hook for his two years of remaining contract (he makes $3.7 million next year). They already tried to waive him in late February, but found no takers. It's conceivable Phoenix could also receive another player from St. Louis in future, if the Blues keep Savage. At the worst, Phoenix simply gets Savage back.
