FLYERS DEAL FOR GAUTHIER
The Philadelphia Flyers acquired defenseman Denis Gauthier from the Phoenix Coyotes for forward Josh Gratton and two second-round draft picks in 2006.
What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers get another hard-hitting defenseman for the playoffs in Gauthier, who is a potential unrestricted free agent this summer. Gauthier gives them insurance in case Derian Hatcher's recent knee injury is more serious than anticipated, but he also provides the aggression the team loves. Kim Johnsson's injury woes was also a factor in GM Bob Clarke acquiring Gauthier.
What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
Gratton is a true heavyweight enforcer of the future who could land a role with the Coyotes in 2006-07. The Coyotes also land two second rounders from Philly, who still own two more from the 2006 draft. The Coyotes' decision to re-sign Derek Morris earlier made the Gauthier deal more plausible. Phoenix will continue to eye the future, since they are a playoff long shot this season.
