OLLI A FLAME
The Calgary Flames acquired center Olli Jokinen and a third-round draft pick in 2009 from the Phoenix Coyotes for forwards Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust and a conditional first-round draft pick (2009 or 2010).
What does it give the Calgary Flames
The Flames were getting great mileage out of their top three centers (Lombardi, Daymond Langkow and Craig Conroy), but Jokinen provides a potential legitimate first-line pivot. He has history with Flames coach Mike Keenan, and played his best hockey under "Iron Mike"--which bodes well. Calgary paid a steep price to get him, but they are legitimate Stanley Cup contenders if Jokinen does his part.
What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
Lombardi's speed hasn't yet translated into consistent point production but perhaps a change of scenery will get the best out of him. At worst, he's a great two-way center. At best, he could be part of a great 1-2 center punch with Kyle Turris for years to come in Phoenix. Prust is another tough winger that Phoenix loves to use, while a first rounder is icing on the cake for an underachiever like Jokinen.
