CARCILLO HEADS TO PHILLY

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired winger Daniel Carcillo from the Phoenix Coyotes for winger Scott Upshall and a second-round draft pick in 2011.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
Philly picks up two commodities in this deal: a little cap room, and a lot of sandpaper. Carcillo led the NHL in penalty minutes last season (with a whopping 324, with no one else close) and he can also score a little. He fits in nicely with Philly's team toughness identity, and the Flyers don't lose much in the scoring department swapping him for Upshall. While the difference in the two players' salaries isn't very big, it's enough to give Philadelphia some breathing room since they are so close to the salary cap. A second-rounder may be a bit steep for what they're getting, but the Flyers are a contender trying to get to the Stanley Cup finals.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
Upshall was the sixth-overall pick of the 2002 NHL Draft and while he hasn't exactly been a bust, he hasn't come close to living up to those early expectations. The cost-conscious Coyotes also have the option of letting him go over the summer (as he is a restricted free agent), which they didn't have with Carcillo. Adding the second-rounder is a great bonus in the deal, and will help them continue to stockpile as much young depth as pretty much any NHL team.
