FLYERS ACQUIRE BRYZGALOV'S RIGHTS

The Philadelphia Flyers acquired goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov from the Phoenix Coyotes for a third-round draft pick in 2012, a conditional draft pick and winger Matt Clackson.

What does it give the Philadelphia Flyers
Obviously, the Flyers are being pro-active here in an attempt to stop the bleeding in goal. Bryzgalov is the best goaltender that may be available on the UFA market on July 1, unless Philly is able to sign him before then. Reportedly, the Russian goalie seeks a lucrative deal, so the Flyers haven't landed their man just yet. They paid a steep price (third rounder, plus another potential draft pick) just to start negotiating with Bryzgalov. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

What does it give the Phoenix Coyotes
Apparently, Bryzgalov's salary demands scared the Coyotes into moving his UFA rights fairly early on in the process. Where does that leave Phoenix? Without a No. 1 goaltender, for starters. Veteran Jason LaBarbera is a solid backup, but it would be asking too much of him to take on a bigger role at this time. The Coyotes did land two draft picks here, so that's the good news. Clackson becomes a UFA on July 1, and was included because Philly needed to dump a contract.
