DUBNYK DEALT TO COLORADO
The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round draft pick in 2021.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche have been searching for a backup to Vezina Trophy candidate Philipp Grubauer all season, so the hope is that veteran Dubnyk can provide more stability than current placeholder Jonas Johansson. Getting San Jose to take on Pateryn's contract also helps Colorado with regards to the salary cap.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks
For the Sharks, moving one veteran goaltender (Dubnyk) makes sense since they also have fellow vet Martin Jones in the crease area. Jones is signed through 2023-24, while Dubnyk is scheduled for unrestricted free agency this off-season, so it makes sense to deal the latter to the Avalanche here.
Fantasy impact
Dubnyk had pretty much become a true No. 2 behind Jones recently, which is exactly the role he will have in Denver. Therefore, Dubnyk's fantasy value actually drops after this deal. Only Grubauer owners should be interested in Dubnyk at this point. As for Pateryn, he could remain on the Taxi Squad after moving to a new team. He offers zero fantasy value.
