RICHARDSON BACK TO T.O.

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Luke Richardson from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a conditional fifth-round draft pick.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
By adding Richardson, who began his career in Toronto, the Maple Leafs are clearly still focusing on the postseason. Richardson had been the captain of the Blue Jackets, but turned in his captain's "C" earlier this season when his role diminished. He'll add some depth to the injury-depleted Toronto blueline. Richardson, who turns 37 at the end of March, could be in his final days as an activer NHLer.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets needed to make room for promising youngster Aaron Johnson, who has been on the Columbus-Syracuse shuttle this season. By dealing Richardson, it creates more playing time for Johnson--as well as fellow young blueliners Ron Hainsey and Rostislav Klesla. The fifth rounder could be either a 2006 or 2007 pick, depending on whether Toronto makes it into the postseason dance with Richardson.
