BOGUNIECKI FOR CALDWELL

The New York Islanders acquired forward Eric Boguniecki from the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenseman Ryan Caldwell.

What does it give the New York Islanders
The Islanders have plenty of defensive depth, so they could afford to deal away Caldwell at this time. In Boguniecki, the Isles acquire more depth for their forward lines. He'll move from Syracuse to Bridgeport (AHL) for now, but could see an NHL call-up at some point this season.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
Boguniecki was merely a short-term forward possibility, so the Jackets did well to add a potential blueliner for the not-too-distant future. Caldwell may get a chance with Columbus, especially since the bottom three defensemen on the roster either lack experience (Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Aaron Johnson) or are journeymen (Anders Eriksson).
