RANGERS, JACKETS SWAP FOUR

The New York Rangers acquired wingers Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche from the Columbus Blue Jackets for defensemen Fedor Tyutin and Dan Fritsche.

What does it give the New York Rangers
The Rangers signed two veteran defensemen in Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival via free agency, so they had a little surplus to make a deal. So, they moved out Tyutin and Backman in order to land the slick Zherdev and feisty Fritsche. The former will try to replace the offense missing from the expected departure of Jaromir Jagr, while the latter will be a poor-man's version of free-agent defection Sean Avery.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets lost Ron Hainsey to free agency, so they needed help on the blueline. They added veteran Mike Commodore as a free agent, and now Tyutin and Backman. The Jackets are now solid along the backline but have even greater issues up front.
