SENS TAKE A CHANCE ON FILATOV

The Ottawa Senators acquired winger Nikita Filatov from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a third-round draft pick in 2011.

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The Senators made a conscious effort to upgrade their offensive stable at the draft this year, and they even picked up some potential immediate help in Filatov--a disappointing winger with a lot of untapped NHL scoring upside. The cost for taking a chance on Filatov wasn't high, either. It's been a good draft for Sens GM Bryan Murray, especially if Filatov pans out.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets decided to give up on Filatov, just three years after taking him sixth overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. They acquired a third rounder in this transaction, and used it to select T.J. Tynan--a highly skilled but diminutive center. The Jackets clearly want to turn the page here, as they are starting a new era with the recent acquisition of center Jeff Carter.
