KAHKONEN TO SAN JOSE

The San Jose Sharks acquired goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen and a fifth-round draft pick in 2022 from the Minnesota Wild for defenseman Jacob Middleton.

What does it give the San Jose Sharks
The Sharks had a strong goaltending tandem in the first half of the season, but injuries to both Adin Hill and James Reimer ruined that early momentum. So adding Kahkonen, who still has plenty of untapped potential, is a solid move at this time. San Jose still has a shot at the playoffs, so Kahkonen could be a major key down the stretch.

What does it give the Minnesota Wild
The Wild acquired Marc-Andre Fleury from Chicago earlier in the day, so moving a goaltender was necessary. In Middleton, Minnesota adds more defensive depth for a potential playoff run. Middleton has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2021-22 but his role will be significantly smaller with Minny. Can he make the adjustment?

Fantasy impact
The Wild would be a better team for any fantasy goaltender, so Kahkonen's numbers may not improve in San Jose. That said, his playing time will likely rise as a Shark, so he is worth picking up at this time. Middleton is not likely to be a fantasy factor down the stretch. He can be safely ignored in most leagues.
