MATT MURRAY MOVES TO TORONTO

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired goaltender Matt Murray, a third-round draft pick in 2023 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2024 from the Ottawa Senators for future considerations.

What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
Obviously, this deal is a steal for Toronto. After all, they needed a goaltender in the worst way. Murray will take over at least half of the goaltending responsibilities for the Maple Leafs. Furthermore, Ottawa retained 25 percent of Murray's salary for the next two campaigns, and also surrendered two future draft picks to Toronto. In return, the Leafs gave up literally nothing!

What does it give the Ottawa Senators
The motivation for the Senators here was to rid themselves of Murray's contract. However, they did Toronto, their eternal provincial rivals, a huge service by giving up draft picks and also retaining salary for Murray's services. Ottawa is expected to be very active in free agency this week, and they may also not be done with trades. But this one does not look good.

Fantasy impact
Veteran Murray, who won two Stanley Cup rings as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, provides Toronto with the clutch experience in goal that they had been lacking. Unfortunately, he has struggled with injuries and inconsistency for several years now. That said, he is worth picking up in many league formats this year. He is a strong rebound candidate in 2022-23.
