MARINO MOVED TO NEW JERSEY

The New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman John Marino from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Ty Smith and a third-round draft pick in 2023.

What does it give the New Jersey Devils
This is an interesting trade for New Jersey, who already had Dougie Hamilton and Damon Severson on the right side of their defense. Marino gives them another solid option. Slowly, New Jersey's blueline is rounding into shape nicely.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins needed cap space, so Marino was the player sacriced at this time. Smith gives them a young offensive defenseman with plenty of room to grow. Pittsburgh did not have a third-round pick in 2023, so getting one back in this deal makes sense.

Fantasy impact
Marino was behind Kris Letang in Pittsburgh, and now he will slot behind Hamilton (and possibly even Severson) with New Jersey. His fantasy value is middling at best. Smith has loads of fantasy upside, but he must first crack the Penguins lineup. He is more of a keeper option at this time.
