PENGUINS PICK UP PETRY
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired defenseman Jeff Petry and forward Ryan Poehling from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Mike Matheson and a fourth-round draft pick in 2023.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
After trading away John Marino to New Jersey, the Penguins acted quickly to replace him by adding Petry to the mix. The veteran defender is a solid offensive D-man who can log big minutes and play in all situations. Poehling is at the point in his career when something needs to happen. The change of scenery should help kick-start his career.
What does it give the Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens were always going to move Petry this off-season, and Poehling was also a player on the outs with the organization. In return, Montreal adds a local defenseman in Matheson. He is extremely mobile and can log huge minutes in all situations. The Canadiens will use him a lot. Montreal also added a fourth-round pick in '23 in this transaction.
Fantasy impact
Petry's minutes will go down in Pittsburgh (playing behind Kris Letang), and his days as a first-unit power play performer are over. So his value may take a bit of a dip. As for Matheson, he could see a bit of a spike if used more on the power play in Montreal. Poehling is a complete wild card from a fantasy perspective. Keep an eye on him.
